January 2010

MEMBERSHIP

We welcome our new members for this month: Bill Rouse and Rodney Richards.  We hope you will make lots of new friends and enjoy good shooting.  Thank you, Neil Harris, for going the “extra mile” to be there to conduct the safety briefing for the new members.

Pres. Hayes gave a brief reminder that our club is also a Junior Division.  As they are the future of the shooting sports, their activities have priority and the club is to schedule our individual shooting times around them.  All junior shooting times are posted on the web site, so we are urged to check before shooting, to avoid disappointment.  Some of these times are:

February – High School Rifle Teams 3:00 PM tri 7:00 PM Mon-Fri.

Hunter Safety Classes – Selected Saturdays TBA in May, July, and Aug.

Civil Air Patrol Cadet Basic Rifle Encampment – June 5 and 6  7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

We were reminded that our range is for .22 rifle target shooting and pistol target shooting for .45 and lesser calibers.

OLD BUSINESS

FURNACE:  Another bird has caused our furnace to malfunction.  The Furnace Co. has been called to repair it.  As it costs $100 every time they make a repair-call, Pres. Hayes announced that a screen will be installed to prevent this from happening in the future.

LEAD MINING WORK PARTY: Thank you to the 12 or so members who come out for

this on Sat. Jan. 16. We were able to complete this task in about 3 hours. Sale of the

Product from this clean up and the saved product from 2009 netted the club approximately $650.

THANK YOU TO OTHER VOLUNTEERS: We owe a big thanks to Greg Martin who

Repaired the bowling pin shoot tables. Neil Harris has volunteered to test them for bounce backs. A big thank you to Jim(Cal) Miller for installing the new faucets.

FINANCES: Your dues are to be in by Feb. 28th at the latest to avoid your number being

Removed from the door access system. Send $120 to Centralia Rifle Club, PO Box 465,

Centralia, WA 98531.

LIGHTING

Three new 65 Watt Flood with similar brightness to our current bulbs were installed this month and more will be installed this weekend on the north side of the range. Our NRA

Grant is expected to be funded and then we can get rid of the old wiring and have a safer

Range and a well lighted and cost effective lighting system.

FRIENDS OF NRA

We receive much of grant from this group. Now they need our help with their annual

Fund raising event: The Friends of NRA Banquet & Auction. This involves ticket sales

and rounding up business to donate prizes.  We want to really help this organization.  Their next meeting is at the OUR RANGE ON Feb. 20 AT 8:30 a.m. BREAKFAST IS AT 7:00 a.m. AT JUDY’S CAFÉ.

SPECIAL PISTOL EVENT NEEDS RSOs

The City of Centralia Employees Shooting event is set for March 20.  This is a familiarization and appreciation event for our city and the help they provide.  RSOs let us know if you can make it—you all will be needed.

UPDATE ON PLANNED SPORTS COMPLEX

The new plans for the sports complex do not include a new range.  Our building will be left as is. With the increased traffic expected however, we will benefit.  More people will find out about our range and we might be able to hold open shooting days with advanced publicity. Stay tuned for this.  There is land by the sewage plant that might be leased from the city for an outdoor range.  It was decided to explore this possibility.

NEW BUSINESS

SAFETY:  Pres. Hayes showed us brass from a 223 and 300 savage which were found in the range. This, as well as a hole in the skin of the building a 45 triggered an extended discussion on ways to eliminate this high caliber pistol problem. A committee was appointed to recommend mandatory training for members in pistol handling in the range, perhaps using the NRA First Steps Course.  Rebuilding one bay for close range shooting is also to be considered as well as a redesign of berms for the sand traps.  Next month will be decision time on this.

NEW RIFLES AND SOME FOR SALE: Two Suhl M150 .22 target rifles have been purchased by the club for $670 each.  Our NRA grants for the Junior Division should result in two additional ones for upper level shooters. As a result we will be selling some older ones we have in our armory.  A motion was passed to sell at fair market price (with two weeks advanced sale allowed to members before offering them on Gunbroker.com).  Those for sale will be 1Winchester 52 (approximate price $450) and 6 Remington X514s (middle grade target rifle, prior military that we purchased from CMP).  Sale price will be approx $350.

BULLS EYE LEAGUE BEGINS FEB 4, 2010 AT 7 P.M.

ROOF: The classroom addition on the range was built about 60 years ago with a flat roof.  It has been hot tarred repeatedly over the years.  It is leaking badly again.  We need to tin and add slope to the roof and are seeking bids on this now.  In addition, the nails on the rest of the roof need to be replaced by screws.  A bid is being sought for this job as well.
